Children's Rights at Abercerdin Primary School

Children and young people have 42 rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)These rights ensure that every child grows up happy, healthy, and safe.

In 2011, Wales became the first country in the UK to incorporate the UNCRC into its domestic law, demonstrating a commitment to upholding children's rights in all areas of life.

The Right Way! A Children's Right's Approach!

A Children’s Rights Approach at Abercerdin Primary

A Children’s Rights Approach is a principled and practical way of working with children that places the UNCRC at the heart of education.

At Abercerdin Primary School, we ensure that children’s rights are embedded in teaching, planning, policies, and decision-making to create a school community where all children feel valued, respected, and empowered.

The Five Principles of a Children’s Rights Approach

1️⃣ Embedding children’s rights

  • At Abercerdin Primary, all policies and practices are underpinned by the UNCRC.
  • Our school community understands and promotes children’s rights.

2️⃣ Equality and Non-Discrimination

  • We believe every child should be given equal opportunities to thrive and succeed.
  • Our school vision and mission reflect our commitment to inclusivity and aspiration for all.

3️⃣ Empowering children

  • At Abercerdin Primary, pupils help shape their own learning journey.
  • We design learning experiences that build independence and lifelong skills.

4️⃣ Participation

  • Adults and pupils share decision-making and work together to improve our school.
  • We encourage pupil voice and actively involve students in school policy and change.

5️⃣ Accountability

  • Abercerdin Primary School is held accountable for ensuring children experience their rights.
  • Our governing body and pupil leadership groups oversee how well we uphold children’s rights.

Know Your Rights!

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is a list of all the rights that children have. These rights are the things every child needs to be safe, healthy, and happy.

The Three Core Principles of Children’s Rights

1️⃣ Provision – Every child has the right to what they need to develop (e.g. education, healthcare).

2️⃣ Protection – Every child has the right to be kept safe from harm.

3️⃣ Participation – Every child has the right to have their voice heard and be involved in decisions that affect them.
